  • The application of entomopathogenic fungi as biological control agent is an activity that has been carried out for a long time because they can regulate insect pests through specific formulations of spores and blastospores as infective units, as well as their endophytic ability in some plants offers protection against plant pathogens. Due to its wide distribution and antagonistic ability, Beauveria bassiana is widely used all around the world. Among its main mechanisms of infection is the production of secondary metabolites that have antimicrobial properties and interfere with the immune response of insects. Currently, the fungal secondary metabolites have attracted the attention of the scientific community. The pigments produced by B. bassiana, mainly red and yellow, are relevant in the pathogenic process against insects and have antiviral, cytotoxic as well as antimicrobial properties against bacteria of clinical interest and phytopathogenic fungi. Therefore, this review details and compiles important aspects of the properties of the main B. bassiana metabolites, focusing on the fermentation systems used to obtain them, biosynthesis, aspects of toxicity and pest biocontrol.
