abstract
In this article, we propose the identification of an iconographic cycle that has so far gone unnoticed by specialized historiography. It consists of a series of scenes painted on the walls of the presbytery of the church of San Luis Obispo in Tlalmanalco, State of Mexico. Based on the visual record of the fourteen scenes and the analysis of their composition, we were able to establish the subject of most of them, using written sources and reference from other visual programs. This method allowed us to propose a possible iconographic path that takes us back to a series of Flemish engravings by Philip Galle (1537-1612), images that visually narrate the life of Saint Francis. Thanks to this procedure, we present our reflections on the importance of this iconographic program and the representation of the life of Saint Francis in the convent mural painting of the 16th century in New Spain.
