abstract

  • Objective: To determine the factors associated with the development of depressive episodes in university students, from the basic elements considered in the general self-care deficit theory of Dorothea Orem. Methods: This is a prospective, descriptive cause-effect analysis, on a sample of 819 students from different grades and careers (Nurse Care, Administration, Public Accountant, Civil Engineers, and Marketing). A standardized structured instrument was created ad hoc to measure diverse factors, presenting a Crombach%27s alpha of 0.92. Results: A 14.6%25 of the female university students presented depressive episodes, whereas in the male gender this entity was present in 5.7%25 (p < 0.001). After multivariate analysis by means of binary logistic regression, the antecedent of intrafamily violence (OR = 16.63, p < 0.001) was the factor independently associated with depression in this group of students. Conclusion: The frequency of depressive episodes in this student population was higher in women tahn in men. The antecedent of intrafamily violence was strongly associated with the presence of depressive episodes.
