abstract

  • BACKGROUND: Skin disorders are a frequent origin of medical consultation at the primary health care in Mexico. The population access to a dermatological consultation has serious limitations due the infrastructure design of the Mexican health system, as socioeconomic, demographic and occupational factors. OBJECTIVE: To determine the number, density and geographical distribution of practicing dermatologists in Mexico. MATERIAL AND METHOD: An observational study was done searching of the number of practicing dermatologists during 2018, by means of public lists of the Mexican Board of Dermatology, electronic medical directories, and contact with regional dermatological societies. The density of dermatologists was calculated on a state, metropolitan and urban areas. The population of Mexico and its distribution among regional areas were obtained from the National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Informatics, and the National Population Council. RESULTS: The number of dermatologists found was 2062. All were distributed in urban areas. Jalisco and Chiapas were the states with the greatest and lowest dermatologist s densities, respectively. Mérida and Tecomán, Colima, were the metropolitan areas with the greatest and lowest densities, respectively. © 2021 Comunicaciones Cientificas Mexicanas S.A. de C.V.. All rights reserved.
