On the last years the electric vehicles have been broadly studied by industry and academic fields. Some of the research has been focused on the use of the regenerative braking. However, the majority of the works only take into account the recovery of the kinetic energy without taking into account the stability and safe braking. From this perspective, this paper presents an analysis to show that the design of a adequate power train topology allows a better utilization of the kinetic energy and safe braking. The benefits are featured using three standard driving cycles for a 1550 kg electric vehicle via simulations. © 2016 IEEE.
