Trapping of francium for parity violation experiments Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • A new apparatus for producing and on-line trapping of francium for parity non-conservation (PNC) experiments at the Stony Brook Superconducting LINAC2 was construceted. Francium atoms, the heaviest of the alkalis, was produced in a heavy ion fusion reaction between a∼100 MeV ion beam and a gold or platinum target. As a result, a 15x106 Fr/sec to the trapping area with better than 90%25 efficiency was produced and delivered. The electrostatic optics of the beamline ensure mass independent transport of all francium isotopes and even other alkalis, such as rubidium, which wer used for testing most of the apparatus.
