  • Medicinal plants constitute the backbone of traditional medicine, which is an alternative to adder ss health issues. Chrysactinia mexicana A. Gray is a small aromatic shrub with curative properties. Analyses have shown that it contains essential oil, resins, tannins, organic acids, pectic materials, flavonoids, sterols, terpenes, maltose, glucose, minerals, chlorophyll and fibres. The essential oil, which is believed to hold the compounds responsible for its medicinal properties, contains 48.4%25 of piperitone, 22.1%25 of eucalyptol and 7.7%25 of α-terpineol. Insecticide action of slightly polar extracts has been reported, as well as antifungal action by compounds such as piperitone, slight estrogenic action by ketosteroids, amoebicide and antibacterial action by flavonoids such as flavan, 3-ols, gallic acid and gallic tannins, antidiarrheal action by gallic tannins (astringents) and pectins (absorbents), expectorant action by eucalyptol, and antioxidant action by flavonoids (hepatoprotectors). ©2011 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
