Cascade Connection of Boost Converters Operating in Discontinuous Conduction Mode for Portable Loads Article uri icon

abstract

  • In recent years, the design of new electronic equipment requires the development of new topologies for power supplies. The above is clear for portable equipment, which many times is classified as light loads. These new applications require power supplies with wide conversion ratios and better efficiencies. A solution to this problem is the use of two or more conventional converters connected in cascade, which have been proposed to operate in continuous conduction mode; however, if these converters operate in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) a better efficiency is achieved. In this paper, a cascade connection based on two boost converters operating in DCM is proposed. A step-by-step procedure for the proper design of the cascade connection is given. Simulation and experimental results for a low power converter validate the proposed methodology. Thus, the design procedure will help in designing converters for light power applications. © 2020 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.
