abstract
The first edition of Luz y método de confesar idólatras y destierro de idolatrías... (1692), by the priest Diego Jaimes Ricardo Villavicencio, includes a textual variant that, although common in books of the time, represents a problem that needs to be resolved in order to establish the critical text and proceed to its edition. The variant consists in the presence, in only some of the extant copies of this work, of a document among the preliminaries of the text: a letter written by the Bishop of Chiapas, Francisco Núñez de la Vega, which was apparently included in the book once printing had already begun. In this study, we use the concepts proposed by the Anglo-Saxon bibliographic system to analyze the variants than can be found in different copies of the same edition: «edition, issue, state». © 2019 Instituto de Estudios Auriseculares (IDEA).
