Painting of weathered Hot-Dip Galvanized structural steel work Article uri icon

abstract

  • There is increasing concern about the painting of weathered hot-dip galvanized (HDG) steel, this being a subject on which published information is relatively scarce. This paper studies the behavior of proprietary paint systems recommended for application over HDG steel weathered in an urban atmosphere; and in condensing humidity, salt fog, and moist sulfur dioxide chambers. In this study, weathered zinc surfaces were cleaned by two methods prior to painting: wire brushing and sweep shot blasting. The data show that several paints perform well over fresh galvanized steel. Problems can occur with paints that react with the zinc surface, giving rise to soluble products at the zinc/paint interface. These products soon destroy adhesion between the paint and the metal and cause paint film delamination.
