abstract
The links that exist between Spain and Latin America have aspects of continuity and change that can be perceived in a form that assumes the concept of hispanoamericanismo and the reciprocal images that can be seen between Spain and Latin America during the 19th century. But the analysis of these characterizations tends to favour Spanish trends, and they do not take into account the reactions that they provoked in Latin America. Thus it is important to explore some discussions on hispanoamericanismo that took place in the decades before 1880 and to observe some Latin American reactions that occurred before the offers of integration between Spain and Latin America. This article explores the discussions on hispanoamericanismo in the magazine La América between 1857 and 1861. This exploration makes it possible to glimpse some of the conceptual frames from which were forged explanations of the social, historical, and cultural conditions of Latin American realities, beyond the scheme of the models and the deviations.
