We present preliminary results concerning natural rubber reinforced with nanometric ZnFe 2O 4 obtained from an industrial solid waste. The study investigate the influence of these nanometric ceramic particles on the processing as well as the mechanical properties of the obtained rubber composite, opening the possibility of partial replacement of carbon black and exposing a new potential composite material. The hardness of unfilled and reinforced rubber increased as nanometric ZnFe 2O 4 was increased. Besides, tensile properties of the reinforced rubber were measured, observing once again that as the amount of nanometric ZnFe 2O 4 particles was increased, ultimate strength improved from 2.5 MPa to almost 20 MPa. © ASM International 2007.
