abstract
In this article, we make an interpretation of the book Historia Antigua de México by the eighteenth-century Jesuit, Francisco Xavier Clavigero, from the perspective of the Ibero-American tradition of human rights, that is, within the legacy of the first defenders of Indians of the sixteenth century. Starting from assuming certain hermeneutical criteria, we analyze the ethical foundations that support the arguments that the Jesuit exposes against the visions of some European authors make about America and its inhabitants. We emphasize his defense of indigenous cultures, as a clear expression of a decolonial tradition of human rights.
