Globally, achieving sustainable development is a huge challenge at present in order to attain food availability for the increasing population. Conventionally, agriculture practices depend on the extensive application of agrochemicals, however, irreparable damage to the ecosystem as well as health issues have led to the research of eco-friendly alternatives. Nanotechnology is a novel and promising alternative that can help to improve yield and food protection. In this sense, several advantages are reported of nanomaterials compared to micrometric materials related to better performance, good compatibility, and protection of compounds. Furthermore, nanomaterials can be incorporated with conventional control systems for food production. The present chapter summarizes recent investigations concerning the synthesis, properties, and applications of nanomaterials in fruits and vegetables production. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
