Tissue engineering, also called regenerative medicine, is the application of the principles and methods of engineering and the biological sciences, to understand the relationship between the structure and function of tissues; and thus, to develop biological substitutes that restore, maintain, or improve the function of damaged or lost tissues. The tissue engineering triad is composed by the scaffolds, the cells and growth factors, or functionalization molecules (Gupte and Ma 2012; Ou and Hosseinkhani 2014). © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.
