In this work, a closed-loop control scheme is proposed to update the insulin protocol of a type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patient. The update algorithm is based on a run-torun methodology. This scheme is now extended to consider an insulin protocol based on two insulin types (rapid and slow actions), and a PI correction term with respect to the regulation error. In addition, an identification algorithm is derived for the sensitivity information related to the insulin protocol. Finally, an extensive simulation evaluation is carried out considering a compartmental model and two insulin regimes. © 2008 IEEE.
