  • Mexico%27s city Metro is the most important public transportation system in Latin America since it serves 5 million users daily. Some important subsystems, such as the mechanism for driving the wagons doors, have been kept the same since its inauguration in 1969 and register high maintenance occurrence. To improve the quality of the service, they urgently need to be modernized. This paper presents a new concept of door opening/closing mechanism based on synchronous bands which aim is to be a safe, reliable, and low-cost replacement option to the mechanism that operates today. An analysis with the finite element method is shown to validate the design. A first prototype has been developed and preliminary tests on cyclic operation suggest a robust concept suitable for the application. © 2018 IEEE.
