Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter have become a standard detector in High Energy and Nuclear Physics in the last 15 years. We review the basic physics of these detectors, give a short historical overview on their development, and describe the involvement of Mexican groups in experiments using this type of detectors. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.
