abstract
The orbital magnetic moments (〈L〉) and spin moments (〈S〉) of mixed fcc CoNPdM and Co NRhM (N, M = 19, 24) clusters are determined by using a self-consistent real-space tight binding method. In all cases considered, 〈L〉 amounts to 20%25-50%25 of the total magnetic moment Mz (Mz = 2〈z〉 %2b 〈Lz〉). Moreover, the Mz are remarkably larger than the Mz (Co) values of the single Co cluster, due mainly to the local spin moments 〈iz〉 induced at the Pd and Rh atoms, which amount to about 20%25 of Mz (2〈iz〉pd,Rh = 0.1-0.8 μB) and to a considerable enhancement of the orbital moments 〈LCo〉 at the Co atoms (〈LCo〉 = 0.2-1 μB). These results are analysed from a local perspective.
