Flavor (Formula presented) symmetry breaking in hyperon semileptonic decay form factors is analyzed using the (Formula presented) expansion. A detailed comparison with experimental data shows that corrections to (Formula presented) are approximately 10%25, which agrees with theoretical expectations. Corrections to (Formula presented) are compatible with first-order symmetry breaking. A fit to the experimental data allows one to predict the (Formula presented) form factor for (Formula presented) decay. The proton matrix element of the (Formula presented) component of the axial vector current [which is equal to (Formula presented) in the (Formula presented) symmetry limit] is found to be (Formula presented). © 1998 The American Physical Society.
