Potential use of creosote bush extract as disinfectant on salmonella typhimurium for broiler pens [Uso potencial de extractos de creosote bush (Larrea tridentata) como desinfectante sobre salmonella typhimurium en instalaciones avícolas] Article uri icon

abstract

  • Extracts of Creosote bush leaves were evaluated for control of Salmonella typhimurium in poultry pens. Solvent and the technique that obtained the highest proportion of extractable material, in vitro, were determined; its bactericidal capacity was determined and the capacity to disinfect poultry pens was eva luated, comparing disinfection with Creosote bush (DC), routine disinfection (DR) and sanitary vacuum (VS). At the end of the disinfection, samples were collected in floor, wall, ceiling and curtain. Seeded in selective medium, differential biochemical tests were performed and colony forming units (CFU) were calculated. The analysis of variance was performed with the GLM procedure and the comparison of means by Tukey, with the SAS software. Using water and the decoction process, with 40 minutes of extraction, the highest percentage of extractable material (36.43%25), the lowest bactericidal concentration (300 mg mL–1), and inhibition halos of 13 mm were obtained. On the wall, the CFU with DC decreased, while in ceiling and curtains they were similar with DC and DR and in floor, lower with DR. It is concluded that the aqueous extract of Creosote bush leaves is an effective disinfection alternative for control of Salmonella typhimurium in poultry pens. © 2020, Asociacion Interprofesional para el Desarrollo Agrario.
