abstract

  • Objectives Analyzing the causes of diabetic patients%27 indifference towards diet and treatment and the factors associated with such disease, such as having a family background of diabetes and hypertension. The sample of patients came from the town of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and its surrounding areas. Methods The study involved a descriptive study of variables such as age, gender, educational level, occupation, family history of diabetes and hypertension and causes of indifference towards diet and treatment. An analytic study was made by comparing groups, regarding the risk of diabetes according to sociodemographic data and family history. Results Forget fullness and an insistence on restricted food intake were the main causes of indifference towards and/or abandoning indicated treatment amongst the 156 patients included in the study. Patients having a family background of hypertension in both parents had a 5.8 times higher risk of Diabetes mellitus compared to those lacking such history (p<0.01). Patients having a maternal history of diabetes had 4.76 times the risk of suffering it compared to those having only a paternal history (p<0.001). Patients having a history of obesity had a 2.4 times higher risk of developing diabetes than those who had not (p<0.05). Conclusions The main causes reported by the patients in the sample for their indifference towards treatment and diet were forgetfulness and an insistence on restricted food intake. The degree of Diabetes mellitus association with having a family background of this disease and hypertension was 2.4 to 5.8 times greater (p<0.05).
