We calculate the interaction between a vortex and a spiral defect in a layered superconductor. The interaction is found to be attractive and to decrease as a power law for large distance. We also calculate the change in the current and magnetic-field distributions of the vortex due to the defect. When the defect is already occupied by a vortex, we find the optimum distance for a second vortex to locate. © 1992 The American Physical Society.
