Nanoantennas are sensitive to polarisation and have been used as optical detectors; these characteristics make them ideal for polarisation division multiplexing. In this reported work, a dipole nanoantenna was fabricated using electron-beam lithography; experimental results show good polarisation discrimination to two orthogonal linear polarisations for this nanoantenna. Also bowtie and dipole nanoantennas were numerically simulated in a PDM system, and results show a polarisation discrimination of 40 and 65dB for the bowtie and dipole nanoantennas, respectively, indicating that dipole nanoantennas are good candidates for PDM systems. © 2011 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.
