Extended versions of the mean spherical approximation are applied to the study of the structural properties of the restricted primitive model in the regime of large coupling and small density, where the gas-liquid phase transition of the model has been located. The numerical results indicate that the long-range behavior, expected in the neighborhood of the critical point, induces strong short-range correlations which point at an enhanced process of ionic association as the critical point is approached. © 1984 American Institute of Physics.
