Inertia in the Brazil nut problem Article uri icon

abstract

  • The results of the experiments conducted on the Brazilian nut problem (BNP) were discussed. Using kinetic energy argument and gradient-coil technique it was found that the bead climbs the granular column driven by inertia in a BNP. The role of the bead-bed kinetic energy contrast in the climbing mechanism was stressed out using velocity as the main parameter. The Reynolds dilatancy was found to be the main force driving the ascension mechanism and the mechanism revealed a friction profile within the column that remained unchanged for different accelerations.
