This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the most significant advancements in utilizing nanotechnology to enhance the effectiveness of cancer phototherapy (PT). Through the exploration of diverse categories of nanomaterials (NMs), the chapter emphasizes the variety of approaches to cancer treatment through light-induced reactive oxygen species and heat generation. From noble metal nanoparticles to carbon-based NMs, metal oxides, and sulfides, as well as the incorporation of natural ligands, each section highlights the importance of these developments in the pursuit of more selective and effective phototherapies. Overall, the chapter offers a comprehensive view of the application of nanotechnology in cancer PT, underscoring the promise of these approaches for the development of advanced and personalized cancer treatments. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
