A simple relation has been derived between the low- and high-temperature values of the magnetization per atom of an N-atom cluster [μ̄N(T=0) and μ̄N(T>TC)]. Taking into account the degree of short-range magnetic order (SRMO) within the cluster, the experimental results for μ̄N(T=0) and μ̄N(T>TC) of FeN and NiN are shown to be in agreement with model-independent predictions. The degree of SRMO in 3d transition-metal clusters retrieved in this way is quantitatively similar to the one known from bulk and surface studies. © 1995 The American Physical Society.
