From Individual to Collective Knowledge Production: A Brief Nonfiction History Chapter uri icon

abstract

  • The fictional images of science created by writers and the image of science prevalent in public discourse are shaped by contemporaneous as well as historical realities. Some of these historical realities—or the fictional depictions they inspired—have had a remarkable impact on the public imagination and have become entrenched as stereotypes. The images of scientists and scientific practice prominent in twentieth-century novels and movies were oft en based on stereotypes that reflected practices of medieval alchemists and early modern scientists, even when the stories drew on contemporary scientific knowledge and technology (Haynes 2017; Schummer 2006).
