abstract

  • The aim of this work was to evaluate the water quality of 11 springs of the natural wetland Ciénega Tamasopo, which are the main source of water available for human use among the population around this wetland. Currently, there is insufficient information about the physicochemical and biological parameters of these springs. The microbiological analysis and in situ parameters such as temperature, pH, total dissolved solids, and turbidity were measured in the 11 springs in two sampling seasons. The results obtained were compared with national (Ecological Criteria for Water Quality, 1989, Official Mexican Standard Modified NOM-127-SSA1-1994) and international legislations (Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and World Health Organization (WHO) to determine whether the quality of spring water is adequate for human consumption. The problems faced by these springs are varied due to anthropogenic and agricultural activities. Therefore, it is necessary to undertake activities and projects for their protection and good use to avoid their deterioration. © 2021 Instituto Mexicano de Tecnologia del Agua. All rights reserved.
