In vitro evaluation of spruce xylan/MWCNTs hydrogel scaffolds for bone regeneration Article uri icon

abstract

  • In this work, hydrogels from spruce xylan (SX) mixed with functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as a scaffold were evaluated for in vitro culture of osteoblastic cells is reported. Chemical conjugation of spruce xylan with tyramine (TA) was used to enable enzymatic crosslinking and obtain hydrogels with fast gelation time. The conjugate was characterized by FT-IR and NMR spectroscopies. Morphological analysis of SX-TA/MWCNTs hydrogel scaffolds were performed with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM); wettability prop-erties were measured by water contact angle (WCA). Osteoblastic cells were cultured and evaluated by LIVE/ DEAD (R), MTS and immunocytochemical assays. The morphology and adhesion of osteoblasts on the scaffolds was analyzed by SEM. The results obtained showed that SX-TA/MWCNTs hydrogel scaffolds have a high potential to be bionanomaterials for use in bone regeneration owed to the increased levels of cell viability, proliferation, and adhesion.
